A comparative study on antioxidant properties of two phyllanthus species growing in Bangladesh

A comparative study of antioxidant properties on two varieties of Phyllanthus (Phyllanthus niruiri L. & Phyllanthus urinaria L. leaves) growing in Bangladesh was done in the present study. Five complimentary test methods namely DPPH free radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay, total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic and flavonoid contents determination were used for the evaluation of antioxidant properties of two species of Phyllanthus. In the present investigation for the evaluation of antioxidant activities the concentration is expressed by the ratio of crude sample per solvent volume instead of extract weight per solvent volume. Based on these concentrations the investigated P. niruri L. and P. urinaria L. leaves extracts exhibited significant results. At 2 mg/ml concentration DPPH radical scavenging capacity of the methanol extract of both the plants was found to show significant (> 90%) activity which is comparable to Ascorbic acid and BHA. In case of reducing power tests for both the extract, the activity of P. urinaria is comparable to that of BHA and AA and that of P. niruiri is comparable to BHA. P. niruiri showed better antioxidant potential than that of P. urinaria based on the observed results of their corresponding methanol extract.

In this connection, macroalgae, water and sediment samples were collected seasonally (pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon) for a year from the study area. The surface water of the estuary was found to be quite rich in NO 3, PO 4 and NH 4, which is more than that of the sediment pore water. Trace elements were determined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The amount of trace metals in the samples were found in the order of Fe> Mn> Zn> Cu. Enrichment factor was done for trace metals in sediment and showed non-crustal origin of Zn and Cu in the monsoon period. Analysis of variance revealed the seasonal variation of trace metal concentration in sediment (except Mn; p> 0.05) and macroalgae (except Zn; p> 0.05). Iron in …

An Exploration of the Key Factors of Corruption and Its Relationship with Poverty in Iraq after the US Occupation (An Analytical Study of Literature)

Iraq is rich in natural resources and like many countries in the Gulf region its most important natural resource is oil. The Iraqi Oil Ministry’s estimate of the country’s oil reserves is about 143 billion barrels. As such, Iraq’s rich oil reserves is the key to the its future prosperity and it can also make it Iraq into one of the main players that can contribute to the stability and security of the global oil market. As it is, Iraq is already the fifth largest exporter of oil with sufficient resources and plans to quickly boost it oil and natural gas production. However, the poverty rate is on the rise in many of the governorates in Iraq and it is reckoned that the most significant reason for the high poverty rate is corruption. Many billions of dollars that rightfully should belong to the people of Iraq have been “stolen” by politicians and their supporters through the use of contracts and fake bills. The most corrupt ministries are the ministries of defense, interior, health, finance, and education. Corruption is also prevalent in the offices of the three presidencies, namely, the Presidents of the Republic, Parliament, and Cabinet.
